The future of farming : Opting for sustainability

Farming has found itself to be a trending topic lately as linked environmental issues are proven to be on the rise. To solve intensive farming’s soil, water and air pollution, alternative farming solutions are to be considered vital at this point. Start-ups, governmental initiatives, independent sustainable projects… Who will be the sustainable farmers of the future? In this article, we tackle the problem with a brilliant initiative :  Floating Responsive Agriculture.

What is Floating Responsive Agriculture ?

Forward Thinking Agriculture is a subsidiary ideas lab of JAPA. It has created Floating Responsive Agriculture : a method to counteract the projected rise of food demand accompanied by the world’s increasing population. The proposal addresses the pressing issue of global food security and introduces a unifying urban design strategy based on a network idea which deals with supply needs and integrates connected self-sufficiency into cities.

The limited land availability, rapidly growing populace, high housing prices and the fact that imports represent 90% of Singapore’s food supply are several of the issues that have led the architects to propose the country as a testing spot for the concept. Adjusted for this context, the approach has been influenced by Singapore’s floating fish farms of Jurong’s fishery port.

« Facing the current challenges of cities growing, land consumption and climate change, we believe projects like the Smart Floating Farms can help change some of the existing paradigms which have led us to the present situation and open new possibilities which can improve the quality of human life and the environment.  »

FLOATING RESPONSIVE AGRICULTURE. How will the floating farms be built. A sustainable concept : using energy from the sun and water from the rain.

Growing over 20 tons of organic food every day

The floating islands work in a very energy efficient way, harvesting sunlight and rainwater, this way creating a sustainable environment. These floating farms can produce even 20 tons of vegetables daily. The great advantage of this invention is that such farms can be built all around the world, even in places that are hardly accessible or not suitable for farming. This will encourage locals to grow their own food and reduce the amount of imported goods, saving money and giving birth to lots of new jobs.

Bringing food to where it’s needed : cities

Based on a Floating Multi-layered strategy which combines Aquaculture(fish), Hydroponics-Aeroponics (crops) and Photovoltaics (solar power & other renewable energies) into a single platform, the aim is that these floating farms be located close to areas where food is most needed: close to cities. This will cause a positive social & economical impact, with the potential of creating new emergent economies, helping people collaborate and learn how to grow this products (pedagogical aspect).  Also, some of them might potentially becoming automated Farm Clusters run by the Internet of Things. »
